Summary

Becky Lynch has responded to the "Becky Hogan" nickname that some fans have used online during her latest WWE run, saying that kind of label tends to follow anyone who stays near the top of the card for a long stretch.

While discussing the reaction, Lynch said fans often assume a wrestler in a protected spot must be maneuvering behind the scenes, even though they do not see how creative decisions are actually made. The comments come as Lynch heads toward a WrestleMania 42 title match with AJ Lee, and not long after she said WWE must rebuild women as WrestleMania main eventers.

Quote from Becky Lynch

Asked about the nickname during her recent interview, Lynch said:

"I don't know. I think that's when you're the top of the card, it happens to everybody. Nobody is unscathed. It was Sami Hogan. It might still be Sami Hogan. It's Cody Hogan, it's Roman Hogan, Seth Hogan, we're all Hogan, which say what you will about the man, one of the biggest stars to ever exist. So, yeah, I think it becomes this thing. People don't understand how creative happens and if they see somebody that is in a preferable spot for a long period of time, they go, okay, that's because that person is politicking and trying to hold everybody down. So, you know, it's just people don't know how it happens, and they don't know what goes into it, and that's fine, you know? They're entitled to have their opinions. I want you to have your opinions, go nuts with your opinions. But now I'm just gonna do what I do, and how you feel about me is how you're gonna feel about me."

What Becky Lynch's comments mean for WrestleMania 42

Lynch naming Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Sami Zayn in the same breath underlines how she sees this as part of the territory for featured stars, not as something unique to her current push. In WWE terms, that matters because Lynch is being positioned as one of the central names in the women's division again heading into WrestleMania 42.

The immediate consequence is that the conversation around Lynch is unlikely to cool off before her title match with AJ Lee. If anything, her willingness to address the criticism directly adds another layer of attention to a bout that already carries major name value on the WrestleMania card.

WrestleMania 42 backdrop

Lynch is not the reigning WWE Women's Intercontinental Champion, but she is scheduled to challenge AJ Lee for the title at WrestleMania 42. That gives her comments extra weight, because the fan debate over her push is happening right as she moves into one of WWE's bigger women's matches of the year.
