Summary

CM Punk said finally reaching the WrestleMania main event was one of the biggest reasons he returned to WWE, explaining that he might not have come back at all if he had already checked that box before leaving the company.

Speaking during a WWE 2K26 release interview, Punk was asked whether his upcoming WrestleMania main event with Roman Reigns would satisfy the younger version of himself. Punk said the milestone was so important to him that accomplishing it earlier in his career could have changed everything about his comeback.

Quote from CM Punk

"You know, satisfy, I don't know if it's the word, but it might be dangerous because, yeah, because if you think about this, if I main evented WrestleMania before I left, I don't think I would have come back because I would have done it. What am I coming back for?"

Punk later reflected on the moment after last year's WrestleMania main event and how much it meant to stand in the ring and take everything in.

"It's just one of those things. I did it last year, and there's that moment in Unreal where there's always cameras on us, but I didn't know they were shooting me at that moment. That moment was just me standing in the ring after the fact. I didn't win, and it's far beyond being about that, and I was just standing in the ring by myself, and I was just looking at like all four sides of the crowd and like people. I could tell there's people from numerous different countries, and I'm just kind of like looking around all four sides, just like soaking it in. Well, if this is the last time I'm ever going to be in a ring. I did it."

What Punk's WrestleMania goal means for WWE

Punk's comments make it clear that the WrestleMania main event was not just another accolade for him, it was unfinished business that still mattered enough to pull him back into WWE after nearly a decade away. That gives this chapter of his run extra weight, because the company is presenting a version of Punk who sees the biggest stage as part of his personal legacy.

It also fits the way WWE has positioned him around WrestleMania season. Punk has already been central to the build in other ways, including when he took aim at Vince McMahon during a Raw promo before WrestleMania 42, and this latest comment reinforces how closely his return has been tied to finally reaching that career milestone.
