Summary

John Cena says the newly announced John Cena Classic is being designed less like a standard tournament and more like a WWE version of an All-Star game, with main roster talent and NXT wrestlers sharing the stage in exhibition-style matches.

Cena first revealed the concept at Backlash, and he now says WWE is building it around exhibition matches and fan participation. Rather than treating the event as a straight win-loss tournament, Cena said the plan includes a fan vote to determine the champion, giving every participant a path to recognition even after a loss. That sharpens the picture from Cena's Backlash announcement of the John Cena Classic.

Quote from John Cena

While speaking with Shakiel Mahjouri, Cena described the idea this way:

"In a business where everybody says that every story has been told before, I want to swim for something new. Of course, I believe in sports entertainment meritocracy, and I believe WWE is an excellent meritocracy. Every statement I say, there are going to be multiple sides of that.

"I know I dropped a lot of information at Backlash. To sum it up in a sentence, it could be a version of WWE's All-Star game. It's a night of exhibition, so we don't have to build many long stories. It is the current, competing with, and it might mean they are paired with, who knows, the bracketology is endless. They could be paired with or up against the future of the company."

Cena later went on to say:

"If you steal the show, maybe you're not lucky enough to get your hand raised, every participant qualifies for kind of a fan All-Star vote, so you could be recognized as the night's champion. I've heard the perspective of 'wins and losses don't matter.' That's a very valid point. We have to figure out the fan vote. There is still a lot to be done. You can vote for the winners. You can also vote for everybody. That's a first time. In an announcement this big, there is a lot of history being made. We're coming up with a new event, a new championship, giving NXT people a chance to face WWE people, fans are gonna be able to vote and everybody qualifies. That's a lot of information to cover in a five-minute interview. I expected questions. It's really exciting. I'm trying to do something new, and that's going to come with praise and critique."

John Cena Classic could give WWE and NXT a different stage

John Cena's format gives WWE a way to put main roster names and NXT talent in the same spotlight without forcing every pairing into a long feud first. If the company sticks with that setup, the event can function as a showcase for rising wrestlers while still leaning on Cena's name and the main roster's star power.

The fan-vote finish would also separate the John Cena Classic from a standard bracket tournament. WWE could center the night around standout performances and crowd response, not just advancement, which fits Cena's description of an All-Star style exhibition. WWE has not yet announced when the tournament will take place or how the voting system will work.
