Summary
Paul Heyman said the road to WrestleMania 42 changed twice before the card landed on its current main event picture.
While speaking on Instagram, Heyman said the original direction for this year was Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins. He then said plans shifted to CM Punk vs. Bron Breakker before that also fell through.
The final card looks very different. Roman Reigns is now set to challenge CM Punk in the night two main event, while Seth Rollins faces Gunther. Bron Breakker is not scheduled to compete because of injury.
That latest Reigns vs. Punk build has already been one of the biggest talking points of WrestleMania week, especially after Roman Reigns questioned CM Punk's recent talking points heading into the weekend.
Quote from Paul Heyman
"Yeah, it pisses me off. I don't think it's a big secret that everything was driving this year to be Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns, and then that fell apart. Then it was going to be Bron Breakker vs. CM Punk, and that fell apart,"
Heyman later went on to say:
"I was in line to be part of the main event this year, but fate intervened not once but even twice. I'd be less than candid if I didn't admit that I take great pride in the fact that the most heavily anticipated match this yes is what I call the real main event of WrestleMania: Brock Lesnar vs. Oba Femi, but history won't record that as the main event."
How the WrestleMania 42 card changed
Heyman's comments frame WrestleMania 42 as a card that was repeatedly reshaped at the top. Reigns and Rollins had obvious long-term history to draw from, while Punk vs. Breakker would have put one of WWE's biggest stars against one of its fastest-rising younger names.
Instead, WWE arrives at WrestleMania with Reigns vs. Punk closing night two and Rollins working a separate match with Gunther. Breakker's injury also leaves one of the promotion's breakout names off the card entirely.
What Heyman's comments mean for Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and CM Punk
Heyman's comments suggest WWE had several different centerpiece directions in play around the same group of top names, which says a lot about how heavily Reigns, Rollins and Punk are shaping the promotion's biggest event. It also adds another layer to Breakker's absence, because Heyman presented him as someone who had been positioned for a much bigger WrestleMania role before plans changed.
For fans, the clearest takeaway is that WWE's final WrestleMania 42 lineup may not reflect where the company expected to end up when the year began. Even so, Heyman made it clear he still views the weekend through the lens of main-event stakes, even if he is not officially attached to the closing match this time.
