Summary
Royce Keys says the hours before his WWE debut were a blur, right down to the unusual way Paul Levesque helped him get ready.
Speaking with Adrian Hernandez, Keys looked back on his surprise appearance in the 2026 men's Royal Rumble match and said he was kept inside his hotel room before the show. After telling Levesque he was frustrated by being stuck there, Keys said a full gym setup was delivered to his room so he could train before heading to the building.
Keys described the experience as surreal, from the flights into Saudi Arabia to finally arriving backstage and seeing himself step into the Royal Rumble against names like Damian Priest and Cody Rhodes. The debut came months before his eventual SmackDown television debut, which he discussed separately earlier this month.
Quote from Royce Keys
"I don't think I slept the night before. Just going to the airport, getting on that first flight. Okay, it's happening. Getting on that second flight and just landing in Saudi, then having someone wait for me... I had to stay in my hotel. I complained, and Hunter had a full gym delivered to me in my whole little living room. My living room was rearranged into a gym. I was pumping it and had to get that pump on. He's a gym guy, so he know how it is. But, that next morning, waking up, getting in the car, going in my room, it was crazy. I sit back and watch clips and I've watched the (Royal) Rumble. I'm like, 'Man, golly, that's me? That's me walking down there and getting in Damian Priest's face? Getting in Cody's face?' It's wild."
What the Royal Rumble moment meant for Royce Keys
Keys' comments underline how seriously WWE treated the surprise, even before he was a regular television presence. A hidden Royal Rumble debut, extra travel secrecy, and Levesque personally making sure he could stay ring-ready all point to Keys being positioned as more than a one-night cameo.
That also adds context to the gap between the Royal Rumble and his SmackDown arrival. Rather than being forgotten after the debut, Keys' own account suggests WWE saw enough in him to protect the surprise first and sort out the longer-term television rollout afterward.
