Summary

Sami Zayn and Trick Williams took their WWE Backlash feud further on the May 8 episode of SmackDown, with a memorial service for the Gingerbread Man turning into a full closing-angle brawl.

The segment played off last week's attack, when Zayn destroyed Trick Williams' Gingerbread Man on WWE SmackDown. This time, the show presented a funeral for the mascot, with multiple wrestlers gathered around the casket while Trick paid tribute.

Funeral segment ends with Lil Yachty reveal

Trick Williams poured out milk for the Gingerbread Man, performed a song during the ceremony, and stood in front of an AI-generated memorial video as the segment escalated.

Zayn eventually interrupted the funeral and mocked the entire scene, arguing that too much television time was being spent on it. He also warned Trick that whatever mind games had worked so far would be answered in a much bigger way at Backlash. Zayn then attacked the United States champion during the segment.

The angle flipped again before the show closed. The Gingerbread Man suddenly got back up, revealing Lil Yachty under the costume. Yachty struck Zayn with a candy cane, and Trick followed with the Trick Shot to leave his Backlash challenger laid out.

What this means for Trick Williams at Backlash

WWE has now pushed the Backlash title match between Trick Williams and Sami Zayn beyond a standard champion-versus-challenger setup and into a feud built around embarrassment, retaliation, and spectacle. Zayn got the first big shot last week, but Trick closed this chapter standing tall on SmackDown.

That does not confirm anything about the title match result, but it does make Sunday's bout feel more personal. Lil Yachty's involvement also gave Trick a memorable final beat before Backlash, which is usually a sign WWE wants the audience locked in on the rivalry rather than just the championship stakes.
