Summary
Sheamus says the match that became Edge's final WWE bout almost went in a different direction.
While speaking on OTB Football, Sheamus recalled that his August 18, 2023 match with Edge in Toronto was not originally expected to happen. According to Sheamus, he had heard Edge's last WWE match was supposed to be against Damian Priest before plans changed.
That Toronto bout ended up becoming Edge's final WWE appearance before he later signed with AEW.
Quote from Sheamus
Sheamus said he enjoyed getting the chance to face Edge in what became the Hall of Famer's last WWE match.
"I loved it. It actually wasn't going to happen. We pitched it and it didn't look like it was going to come to fruition because there were a couple of other things going on. I guess, his final match was supposed to be against maybe Damian Priest. That's what I heard. I don't know for sure. That all changed and it ended up being me and him. At the time, we didn't even realize it was going to be his last match. He was trying to figure out what he wanted to do. It was a match we never had. It was great, so easy, and so much fun. It was in Toronto, the crowd was insane. Beth Phoenix and his daughters were there. It was awesome,"
Why the Toronto match still stands out for Edge
Edge and Sheamus had never had that singles match before, which gave the night an added sense of occasion once it became clear it would be Edge's WWE farewell. The setting mattered too, because WWE got a major hometown moment for Edge in Toronto with his family at ringside.
Sheamus also said they did not fully know at the time that it would be Edge's last WWE match, which makes the story feel more like a late change in direction than a carefully staged sendoff.
What Sheamus' comments mean for Damian Priest
Sheamus' account suggests Damian Priest was at least discussed internally for a notable spot opposite Edge before the plan changed. Even without confirmation beyond what Sheamus heard, it is another reminder of how highly Priest was being considered during that period, just before he became an even bigger part of WWE television.
For Edge, the final result gave him a first-time singles match with Sheamus rather than a Judgment Day-related exit, and that made his last WWE match feel more personal than storyline-driven.
