Summary

CM Punk looked back on his long history with Rey Mysterio and said it still feels surreal that both men remain active at a high level so many years after their major WWE feud in 2009.

Punk discussed that history during a recent interview, pointing to how far both careers have stretched. He noted that he and Mysterio also shared the ring with Eddie Guerrero in 2002, then worked extensively against each other in 2009, and are still crossing paths in WWE now. Punk and Mysterio are both scheduled for championship matches at WrestleMania 42 later this month.

That same interview also produced Punk's comments about how not main eventing WrestleMania during his first WWE run may have helped bring him back, a point he expanded on in another recent story.

Quote from CM Punk

"I'm definitely into what's going on now, and, it's not like I'm over anything in the past, It's more, I look at how far I've come, you know, because I was watching somebody play the game and they were playing as me wrestling Rey Mysterio, and I was just like, man, it's crazy. Cause it's 2008. But then me and Rey also had like a banger of a match with Eddie in like 2002, you know? Then I went on to wrestle him extensively in like 2009 and now today we're still doing it. So it really just kind of shows like the staying power. I look at him as one of the greats. So if I'm still side by side with him, you know, doing stuff, we tagged on a RAW in December and it's just like, those are, those are the moments that make everything looking back at it, like kind of mind blowing."

What Punk and Mysterio's history says about WrestleMania 42

Punk tying together 2002, 2009, and the present day underlines how unusual both careers have been. WWE has been able to keep two wrestlers from that era relevant enough to still place them in championship situations at WrestleMania 42, which speaks to both men's longevity and name value.

It also gives extra weight to any present-day interaction between them, even outside a direct feud. When Punk says teaming with Mysterio on RAW in December stood out to him, it reinforces that their shared history still means something on current WWE television.
