Summary
Ilja Dragunov says he had no advance read on how Brock Lesnar would react when the two shared the ring in the 2026 men's Royal Rumble.
Dragunov entered the match at No. 17 and lasted a little more than 10 minutes before Lesnar eliminated him. The sequence drew plenty of attention because Dragunov fired off several chops, Lesnar roared back at him, and then threw him over the top rope.
While speaking with Adrian Hernandez, Dragunov said the moment meant more to him than the criticism that followed. He framed it as a chance to stand directly in front of one of WWE's biggest stars and show exactly what kind of wrestler he is.
That exchange has only become a more notable snapshot of Dragunov's main roster presentation now that Lesnar has stepped away from wrestling. WWE has already leaned into that history in its post-WrestleMania 42 coverage, including a Brock Lesnar retrospective on Raw.
Quote from Ilja Dragunov
"It was absolutely stunning. Guys, please. I was toe-to-toe in front of Brock Lesnar. How many people in this lifetime can do this? Brock Lesnar has been so influential and significant in the history of this company. Having a chance to have this moment, I perfectly expressed who I am. It was stunning. I'm the guy who steps up to the biggest beast you can possible imagine, and I don't hold back. You're going to lose fights in your life. The person who Ilja Dragunov is, is I'm going to step up, face my fear, not hold back, and if I need to suffer the punishment from that, I will gladly do so. Some people will not understand that and say, 'He just got ragdolled out,' but I take it as a medal towards myself that I brought the best fight that I could bring to The Beast."
Dragunov later went on to say:
"I had no idea. You never know what's going to happen. Even outside of this scenario, I don't know if people believe that everything is made step by step and emotion by emotion, but it is action with one cut. A lot of things that happen happen organically, and you don't know how everything will work out. Most things, I roll with the punches."
What the Brock Lesnar moment did for Ilja Dragunov
Dragunov's explanation reinforces how WWE has positioned him, even in defeat. The Royal Rumble spot did not make him look cautious or overmatched, it made him look reckless enough to throw himself at Brock Lesnar anyway, which fits the identity he has carried from NXT to the main roster.
It also gives that elimination more staying power in hindsight. With Lesnar now retired, the moment reads less like a one-off shock exchange and more like a memorable checkpoint in Dragunov's climb, especially because Dragunov has already called it his favorite part of the match.
