Summary
The TNA World Championship main event at Sacrifice on March 27 did not produce a clean finish. Champion Mike Santana and challenger Steve Maclin squared off to close out the show, but the bout was cut short after Maclin absorbed a superkick flush to the face early in the match and could not continue.
After Maclin connected with an elbow and moved toward the ropes, Santana followed and landed the superkick squarely. Maclin went down and ringside doctors, along with TNA President Carlos Silva, stepped in to assess his condition.
What Happened at Ringside
While medical personnel attended to Maclin, Eddie Edwards made his way to the ring and attacked Santana. Edwards holds a guaranteed TNA World Title opportunity, and he did not wait for an invitation to use his spot.
Maclin was taken to the backstage area as the brawl continued. Santana came out on top of the exchange, putting Edwards through a table. The match was officially ruled a no-contest. Santana leaves Sacrifice as TNA World Champion.
What This Means for the TNA Title Picture After Sacrifice
Santana retains, but no new contender was established through the Maclin match. There is no update yet on the extent of Maclin's injury, and his road back to the title picture remains unclear. Maclin had only recently returned to TNA after being reinstated ahead of Sacrifice, making the timing of this injury particularly difficult.
Eddie Edwards made the biggest statement of the night by putting Santana through a table using his guaranteed title shot leverage. His actions position him as the most logical next challenger for Santana's championship.
