Summary
Shawn Michaels said he pushed to keep Je'Von Evans in NXT longer before WWE moved him to the main roster earlier this year.
Michaels, speaking on *The Masked Man Show*, said NXT had planned to build around Evans for the next year before that timeline changed. Evans officially joined Raw in January 2026.
Michaels also touched on other topics during the same interview, including comments on Bret Hart that we covered separately in his response to Bret Hart's claim.
How NXT viewed Je'Von Evans
Michaels made clear that Evans was not someone NXT was ready to move on from creatively. He said the brand saw Evans as a key piece of its plans, which makes the call-up stand out as a sign of how highly he was viewed beyond developmental.
That matters for WWE because Michaels framed Evans as a wrestler NXT wanted to center for the next year. If Raw pulled him up anyway, it suggests Evans had already convinced decision-makers he was ready for a bigger role, even if it forced NXT to change course.
Quote from Shawn Michaels
"Je'Von, I was begging, 'Can we please keep him for another six months?' We had every intention…he was one of the last ones where they were like, 'Oh.' From an NXT standpoint, we were, in our minds, obviously build around Je'Von over the next year. That was the model and they were like, 'We're taking him too.' 'Oh.' I pushed back a little. 'Six months?' 'No.' 'Three?' 'No.' Alright, fair enough. If that's the worst news you have to have that they are taking too many of your people, that means you're doing a pretty good job."
What Evans' move says about WWE's plans
Je'Von Evans reaching Raw in January 2026 after Michaels wanted more time in NXT says plenty about his standing inside WWE. The immediate consequence is that Evans was seen as valuable enough to accelerate plans at the main roster level, even at the cost of reshaping NXT's long-term booking.
For NXT, Michaels' quote also reinforces the current goal of the brand. Losing talent before every major idea plays out can be frustrating creatively, but in this case Michaels treated it as proof that the system is producing wrestlers WWE wants now, not later.
