Summary
Trick Williams said a moment in church helped convince him to pursue a wrestling career, long before he became one of WWE's fastest-rising stars.
Speaking on *The Pivot*, Williams reflected on the winding path that took him from football into WWE. He said the decision was not an obvious one at the time, especially after spending 20 years in football and then working with kids while substitute teaching.
Williams tied that turning point to the crowd chanting "Whoop That Trick" while The Rock was in the ring during WWE's Memphis stop ahead of WrestleMania 40. For him, that moment felt like a full-circle payoff after betting on himself.
Quote from Trick Williams
"To me, it’s one of those moments, but since that jump (to football), I’ve been jumping ever since. Jumped to South Carolina, found myself in a tryout with the Eagles, jumping to WWE. It wasn’t the popular thing to do at the time. I played football for 20 years. When they see me on social media, I’m ‘Sweet Daddy’ Trick and making skits and slamming people. Everybody didn’t understand who came from that football background. I just knew this was what I was supposed to do because it fit me. Seeing how that manifests to ‘Whoop That Trick’ and The Rock being the one in the ring when they are chanting, ‘Whoop That Trick.’"
Williams later went on to say:
"I’m in church and deciding, ‘Do I want to wrestle?’ I went to a tryout, never wrestled before, they said, ‘Go learn what to do and we’ll bring you back for another tryout.’ I’m coaching kids, substitute teaching, and I feel like I’m kind of making a difference where I’m at. Teachers need to get paid more money. I went to church and the Pastor was talking about water coming from the rock. The Pastor said, ‘Follow the Rock.’ I went to Church thinking, ‘Do I need to wrestle or not?’ and the Pastor said, ‘Follow the Rock.’ I moved to Philadelphia two weeks later and said, ‘I’m supposed to wrestle.’ To see The Rock in the ring and people chant ‘Whoop That Trick,’ it’s bigger than me. I’m just doing what I’m supposed to do."
Trick Williams heads into WrestleMania 42 with real momentum
Trick Williams now heads into WrestleMania 42 with a WWE United States Championship match against Sami Zayn, and this story adds more weight to how WWE has framed his rise. It is not just about catchphrases anymore, it is about a performer who clearly sees this run as his calling.
That also lines up with Williams' recent comments that The Rock inspired him, but he wants his own path. With a title shot on deck, WWE has a clear chance to keep presenting Williams as a future centerpiece rather than just a popular personality.
