The name comes from an old backstage tradition. The booker who holds the pencil controls the card. It stuck.
The hook came early. As a kid, watching Mick Foley lose a Hell in a Cell match to Triple H and get forced into retirement, The Pencil cried. Genuinely cried. And absolutely hated Triple H for it. That is the moment wrestling stopped being background noise and became something that mattered.
