Summary

NJPW has announced key matches for both nights of Wrestling Dontaku on May 3 and May 4 at Fukuoka Convention Center, with Callum Newman set for his first IWGP Heavyweight Championship defense against Shingo Takagi.

The lineup also brings Will Ospreay back into NJPW action, as he teams with Great-O-Khan and HENARE to challenge Hirooki Goto, YOSHI-HASHI, and Oleg Boltin for the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship on night two. That return lands quickly after Ospreay reacted to Newman’s IWGP Heavyweight title win, giving United Empire a major presence on the card.

Wrestling Dontaku matches announced so far

Night one on May 3 will feature Yota Tsuji defending the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship against Gabe Kidd, Ren Narita defending the NEVER Openweight Championship against Oleg Boltin, Aaron Wolf facing Don Fale, and Konosuke Takeshita teaming with Shota Umino against HOUSE OF TORTURE's Chase Owens and Yujiro Takahashi.

Night two on May 4 is headlined by Newman vs. Takagi for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. The show will also include the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship match with Ospreay, HENARE, and Great-O-Khan challenging Goto, YOSHI-HASHI, and Boltin, plus Konosuke Takeshita defending the NJPW World Television Championship against Chase Owens.

El Desperado and Místico are also scheduled to face Robbie Eagles and Kosei Fujita of Ichiban Sweet Boys on the second night.

What Newman vs. Takagi means for Wrestling Dontaku

Callum Newman getting Shingo Takagi for his first defense gives Wrestling Dontaku an immediate main-event level title test, because NJPW is putting its new champion in with one of the promotion's most established heavyweights right away. It also keeps momentum on Newman after the title change, while continuing a championship picture that already had Yota Tsuji publicly questioning Newman ahead of a title defense.

Ospreay's return in a six-man title match matters too, because it gives United Empire a second major spotlight match on the same night as Newman's defense. If both matches deliver, Wrestling Dontaku could further define how central Newman and the wider group are to NJPW's current title scene.
