Summary
Seth Rollins said his WrestleMania 42 match against Gunther only came together in the last couple of weeks as he continued his push to be ready for WWE's biggest show of the year.
Rollins discussed the bout during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, where he reflected on how important it was for him to avoid missing WrestleMania after suffering a shoulder injury in October 2025. WWE has scheduled Rollins vs. Gunther for night one of WrestleMania 42 on April 18.
The match will mark Rollins' first bout since shoulder surgery last fall. It also adds another layer to a card that has already featured a recent on-screen confrontation between Rollins and Gunther.
Quote from Seth Rollins
"The idea of missing WrestleMania, when I first got hurt in October, that was the first thing I thought of. I'm like, 'I gotta get back by WrestleMania.' Yes (that was my goal), and I've been in this scenario way too many times, to get hurt and then maybe miss WrestleMania. I missed one WrestleMania in my career and it was one of my lowest moments and so I'm very happy to be back and be able to get in the ring. Not just do a run-in or anything like that but actually have a contest. Wrestling one of the best in the world, GUNTHER, in a match that's kind of come together over the last couple of weeks and so I'm pretty excited for that one."
What Seth Rollins vs. Gunther means for WrestleMania 42
Rollins being healthy enough to return for a full singles match gives WrestleMania 42 another major bout with two established top-level names. Just as important, his comment that the match was finalized late suggests WWE only locked in this direction recently, which helps explain why the build has accelerated heading into the event.
For Gunther, drawing Rollins in his opponent's first match back immediately positions this as more than a simple return story. For Rollins, it turns his comeback into one of the more meaningful in-ring tests on the card instead of a protected cameo.
