Summary
Gunther defeated Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 42 Saturday after a long back-and-forth match turned chaotic late. The finish came when Bron Breakker returned, speared Rollins while the referee was distracted outside the ring, and left Gunther in position to close the match with a sleeper.
The interference changed the match in an instant and gave the finish a much bigger story beyond the result itself. Breakker was not done after that either, as he hit Rollins with another spear once the match was over and then celebrated with Paul Heyman.
How the match turned
Gunther jumped Rollins before the opening bell and briefly controlled the pace, but Rollins fought back once the match officially started. Rollins strung together a buckle bomb and a German suplex, then later landed a Pedigree and a Stomp, only for Gunther to survive.
Gunther answered with his usual power game, including another powerbomb, while Rollins kept finding ways to stay alive. The match stayed even deep into the closing stretch, with both men countering sleepers and Rollins hitting his superplex into falcon arrow combination.
The action spilled to ringside when Gunther powerbombed Rollins on the apron and onto the announce desk. Rollins countered another desk powerbomb attempt with a Pedigree, then stomped Gunther on the table. That looked like the turning point until Breakker appeared and speared Rollins while the referee was checking on Gunther.
Winner
Gunther won the match by sleeper after Bron Breakker interfered and speared Seth Rollins.
Bron Breakker and Paul Heyman enter the picture
Breakker's return gave WrestleMania 42 one of its biggest late-match swerves, and Heyman's post-match celebration made the moment feel even more important. WWE now has a fresh connection between Breakker and one of the most influential managers on the roster.
That also gives Rollins an immediate issue coming out of WrestleMania, because the loss was tied directly to outside involvement rather than a clean finish. It also adds a new wrinkle to the larger WrestleMania picture after Paul Heyman said Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins and CM Punk vs. Bron Breakker were both WrestleMania 42 plans.
What Gunther's win means
Gunther leaves WrestleMania with a major victory, but the way it happened keeps the spotlight split between him and the Breakker surprise. Instead of closing the book on Rollins cleanly, the finish opens the door for WWE to follow the fallout between Rollins, Breakker and Heyman while still protecting Gunther's standing.
For Gunther, that is still a strong WrestleMania result. For Rollins, the bigger story now may be the return of Breakker and why Heyman was standing with him when it was over.
