Summary
Shota Umino has made it clear he wants his shot at Andrade El Idolo, and he wants it to happen in AEW.
After NJPW's Ignition to Dominion event on May 6, Umino said he was coming after the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship and called on Andrade to set the match up on AEW soil. The challenge follows Andrade's title win at Wrestling Dontaku, where he defeated Yota Tsuji to become champion.
How The Challenge Fits NJPW's Title Picture
Umino was already one of the wrestlers circling Andrade immediately after that title change, along with Drilla Moloney. Andrade even floated a possible Triple Threat match in the aftermath, so Umino's latest comments keep him firmly in the front of the line.
Umino's point was simple, he sees the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship as a New Japan title that needs to be brought back under the promotion's banner. That gives this challenge more weight than a one-off cross-promotional callout.
What AEW Means For Shota Umino And Andrade
An AEW setting would instantly make Andrade vs. Umino more than just another NJPW defense, because it would put New Japan's title picture on AEW programming while giving Umino another stateside showcase. Umino last wrestled for AEW in the United States during a Rampage taping in June 2024.
If NJPW follows through on this direction, the next development to watch is whether Andrade accepts Umino's one-on-one challenge or whether the earlier Triple Threat idea with Moloney stays in play.
