Summary

Will Ospreay's return to action in Japan at Sakura Genesis 2026 may have opened the door to another title pursuit in NJPW.

After teaming with Great-O-Khan and HENARE in a win over Yuya Uemura, Taichi, and El Desperado on April 4, Ospreay said backstage that the trio should set its sights on the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship.

What happened at Sakura Genesis

Sakura Genesis marked Ospreay's first match in Japan for NJPW since The New Beginning in Osaka in February 2024. He reunited with United Empire stablemates Great-O-Khan and HENARE, and the group beat Uemura, Taichi, and Desperado.

The current NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Champions are Hirooki Goto, YOSHI-HASHI, and NJPW STRONG Openweight Champion Oleg Boltin. Earlier on the same show, that unit retained the belts against HOUSE OF TORTURE's Ren Narita, Chase Owens, and Yujiro Takahashi.

What Ospreay's challenge could mean for United Empire

Ospreay bringing Great-O-Khan and HENARE into the NEVER 6-Man picture gives United Empire an immediate direction in NJPW if the promotion follows up on the idea. Because Bishamon and Boltin had already retained at Sakura Genesis, the champions were firmly established on the same card that Ospreay made his pitch.

It also keeps Ospreay tied to United Empire business in Japan even after Callum Newman captured the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in the main event. If NJPW moves ahead with the challenge, the story naturally connects Ospreay's return to a fresh title program rather than a one-off appearance.
