Summary

Will Ospreay says he wants to return for another G1 Climax in the future after making his NJPW in-ring return at Sakura Genesis. Ospreay teamed with Great-O-Khan and HENARE on the show to beat El Desperado, Taichi, and Yuya Uemura in his first NJPW match since leaving full-time for AEW in January 2024.

Ospreay also pointed to a second goal tied to NJPW's revived fourth-generation IWGP Heavyweight Championship belt. He said he still wants to win the G1, and he also wants the title associated with stars he grew up admiring.

Quote from Will Ospreay

"It's hard to ask Tony (Khan, president) this year if I can take about six weeks off, but I've talked to my wife about it, and I do want to participate in the G1 Climax again someday. I've never won it, so I want to try again. Also, the fourth generation IWGP Heavyweight belt, which was revived this year, has been worn by Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kazuchika Okada, AJ Styles, Kenny Omega, and others, and I've always admired them. So I also want that belt."

What Ospreay's G1 Climax goal means for AEW and NJPW

Ospreay naming the G1 Climax matters because it frames his Sakura Genesis return as more than a one-night appearance. If he eventually gets the time away needed to enter the tournament, NJPW would instantly have a major outside star back in one of its signature events.

His comments about the IWGP Heavyweight Championship also keep him connected to NJPW's top singles picture even while he remains an AEW regular. Ospreay has worked four previous G1 Climax tournaments and reached the semifinals in 2022 and 2023, so this is a realistic goal he is openly leaving on the table rather than a throwaway line.
